Harvey Ostroff - B.A., M.A. Theatre
Educator/ Playwright/ /Actor/ Workshop leader/ Artist
I began my teaching career in Montreal in 1968 and spent 34 years as an educator, mostly in British Columbia. I was fortunate to have had a wide variety of experiences. Most of my time was spent teaching theatre arts in the high school classroom but I managed as well to teach at several universities, act as drama consultant for B. C.'s largest school district and was co-designer of the Fine Arts education module for Simon Fraser Universitiy. I even spent a year working in elementary school. At the same time I managed to write, direct and produce a large number of plays, acted , did voiceover work and presented theatre workshops .
I "retired" in 2002 and since that time have had staged three of my scripts, presented workshops in Characterization, Shakespearean Acting Technique, Scriptwriting, Mime and Clowning, Improvisation and Dancing with Swords. I choreographed the fight scenes in a number of Shakespearean productions and worked with the casts of several plays and musicals to help the actors realize their stage characters. Most recently, I completed a text entitled Monologues and More: a Relevant Approach to High School Solo Performance and Probable Destiny, a new play about a hostage taking in a high school classroom.
I also created a sculpture gallery which I call Driftwood and Whimsey and have had several exhibitions of my works.
Okay, so I'm only somewhat retired. I still get to decide what I want to do each day and that is a true blessing.
I have been happily married for forty + years. I live in Ocean Park B.C. and have two children, both of whom have successful careers in the arts, and a new grand daughter who brings me untold joy.
